ANWB car insurance
ANWB is a Dutch membership organisation that offers roadside assistance, travel services, and car insurance through its subsidiary, Unigarant. ANWB car insurance is available with three levels of cover: third-party liability, third-party liability with limited cover, and comprehensive cover. ANWB was founded in 1883 as a cyclists’ association and has since grown into one of the largest membership organisations in the Netherlands, with more than 4.5 million members. Best known for its roadside assistance service, Wegenwacht, the organisation also offers a wide range of mobility, travel and insurance services.
Car insurance is offered through ANWB’s subsidiary, Unigarant. You don’t need to be an ANWB member to take out a policy, although members receive a 5% discount on their premium. Customers can choose between three levels of cover: third-party liability (WA), third-party liability with limited cover (WA beperkt casco), or comprehensive cover (WA volledig casco / all risk). Optional extras include a three-year purchase value guarantee and legal expenses insurance.
Like all Dutch car insurers, ANWB is supervised by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM).
Pros and cons of ANWB car insurance
Is ANWB car insurance available in English?
No, everything about ANWB car insurance is only available in Dutch. The website, application process, policy documents and customer service are all Dutch only. Some customers report that ANWB doesn’t offer written support in English, even on request. If you’d rather manage your car insurance in English, an insurer like ABN AMRO may suit you better.
Do I need to be an ANWB member to get this policy?
You don’t need to be a member to take out car insurance with ANWB. However, members receive a 5% discount on their premium, along with other membership benefits. A Wegenwacht roadside assistance subscription includes ANWB membership automatically, but taking out car insurance alone does not.
Strong reputation, but worth comparing first
“ANWB is a trusted brand in the Netherlands, which can be reassuring if you’re still getting to know the local insurance market. Just keep in mind that using a repairer outside ANWB’s network means paying a € 350 excess. As ANWB isn’t included in our comparison tool, it’s worth comparing its cover and premiums with the insurers on Autoverzekering.nl before making a decision.”

Additional coverage options
ANWB offers three optional extras to extend your car insurance:
- Passenger insurance (SVI): provides financial cover for you and your passengers after an accident, including compensation for personal injury and damage to personal belongings. Cover is available up to € 1,000,000 per accident.
- Motor legal protection (Verkeersrechtsbijstand): covers legal costs and expert legal advice for traffic-related disputes, such as liability claims, damage compensation or disagreements over buying, selling or repairing a car.
- Three-year purchase value guarantee (Drie jaar aanschafwaardegarantie): if your car is stolen or declared a total loss within three years of purchase, ANWB reimburses the full purchase price, up to € 75,000. For vehicles worth more than € 75,000, the payout is based on the ANWB Koerslijst market value, plus 10%. This add-on is only available with comprehensive (all risk) cover. Without it, purchase value cover is limited to the first year after buying the car.
Claim-free years and the no-claims bonus ladder at ANWB
In the Netherlands, your claim-free years (schadevrije jaren) play an important role in determining your car insurance premium. The more claim-free years you have, the higher your no-claims discount and the lower your premium. With ANWB, the maximum no-claims discount is 80%.
ANWB calculates your discount using a 21-step no-claims bonus ladder (bonus-malusladder). Each claim-free year moves you up one step, until you reach the maximum discount. If you make a claim, you’ll lose 5 claim-free years and move down several steps on the ladder, which may reduce your discount or even result in a premium surcharge. Multiple claims in the same insurance year can increase that surcharge to as much as 40%.
Second car scheme at ANWB
If you already have a car insured with ANWB, you can use your existing no-claims discount for a second car and receive an immediate discount of up to 65%. At the same time, you build up claim-free years on the second policy, allowing the discount to increase to a maximum of 80%. The same scheme is available to your partner, as long as you both live at the same address.
