Pros and cons of ABN AMRO car insurance
Is ABN AMRO car insurance available in English?
Yes, the insurance information, customer support, terms and conditions and European accident statement form are all available in English. The only exception is the online claims form, which is currently available in Dutch only. To submit a claim in English, call +31 (0)38 49 67 123 on weekday mornings, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Do I need a BSN or Dutch bank account to take out this policy?
You need an ABN AMRO bank account to take out ABN AMRO car insurance. If you don’t have one yet, you can open one first.
To open an ABN AMRO account, you’ll need a BSN (Burgerservicenummer). Dutch banks are legally required to register your BSN for reporting to the tax authorities and the Depositogarantiestelsel.
You get a BSN automatically when you register with your local municipality, which you’re required to do within five days of moving to the Netherlands. Once registered, you can open an ABN AMRO account through the app in about 10 minutes, using just your ID and a selfie. If you haven’t received your BSN yet, you can add it later, and take out your car insurance once your account is active.
Manage your ABN AMRO car insurance online
“ABN AMRO’s car insurance works well for people who are comfortable managing everything online, through My ABN AMRO Insurance. But that convenience comes with a trade-off: customer support leans heavily on digital channels, so if you’d rather sort things out by phone or in person, that’s less straightforward here than with some other insurers.”

Additional coverage options
With additional coverage options, you can add extra protection to your policy. ABN AMRO offers the following:
- Passenger insurance (schadeverzekering inzittenden / SVI): covers injury and material damage suffered by you and your passengers after an accident, including personal injury, damage to personal belongings and consequential damage. It pays out even if you’re at fault for the accident yourself.
- Breakdown assistance Netherlands (Pechhulp Nederland): get help if your car breaks down somewhere in the Netherlands, for example due to a flat battery or a punctured tyre. If your car can’t be repaired right away, a replacement car is included for up to 7 consecutive calendar days.
- Breakdown assistance abroad (Pechhulp Buitenland): planning a road trip abroad? This covers you across Europe, including a replacement car for up to 21 consecutive calendar days if repairs take longer than 24 hours. Note that the Netherlands itself isn’t covered under this option, so you’ll also need breakdown assistance Netherlands.
Claim-free years and the no-claims bonus ladder at ABN AMRO
In the Netherlands, your car insurance premium depends heavily on your claims history, more so than in many other countries. Stay claim-free for a year, and you build up what’s called a claim-free year (schadevrij jaar). Each one earns you a bit more discount on your premium.
The discount (no-claimkorting) is calculated using a no-claims bonus ladder (bonus-malusladder). Switch to a different insurer, and your claim-free years travel with you, though they don’t last forever. Most Dutch insurers only honour claim-free years for a limited period, often around 3 years, after your last policy ends.
No-claims bonus ladder
ABN AMRO uses a 21-step no-claims bonus ladder. The more claim-free years you have, the higher your discount. After 15 claim-free years, you receive the maximum discount of 80%. If you make a claim that isn’t recovered from another party, your discount usually goes down. Exceptions include glass damage and damage fully repaid by another party.
Second car scheme at ABN AMRO
The second car scheme lets you insure a second car at ABN AMRO without starting from scratch. Instead of building up your discount from scratch, the second car gets extra no-claims bonus (up to 70%) right away, based on your driving record with the first car. Build up your own claim-free years on the second car, and you can grow that discount up to 80%.
The discount applies as long as both cars are insured with ABN AMRO and the policies are held by the same person or by a partner living at the same address.
