Nationale-Nederlanden (NN) is part of NN Group, an international financial services company active in ten countries. In the Netherlands, NN offers a wide range of insurance products, including car, home, travel and liability insurance.
Nationale-Nederlanden car insurance is available in three levels: third-party liability (WA), third-party liability + limited cover (WA beperkt casco) and third-party liability + comprehensive cover (WA volledig casco / all risk). Optional extras include motor legal protection, passenger insurance and breakdown assistance. You can manage your policy through Mijn NN or the NN app.
Like all Dutch insurers, NN is supervised by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and the Dutch Central Bank (DNB).
Pros and cons of Nationale-Nederlanden car insurance
Every insurer has its pros and cons. Here’s how Nationale-Nederlanden compares:
The insurer behind ABN AMRO and ING car insurance
“Did you know that Nationale-Nederlanden is also the insurer behind the car insurance offered by ABN AMRO and ING? While the policies are sold under different brand names, they’re all provided by Nationale-Nederlanden. Each brand sets its own premiums and policy conditions, so the policies aren’t necessarily the same.”

Car insurance expert
Is Nationale-Nederlanden car insurance available in English?
Unfortunately not. The website, application process and policy documents are all in Dutch. If you contact customer service, you may be able to speak to someone in English, although English-language support is not officially offered.
Do I need to live in the Netherlands to take out this policy?
Yes. Nationale-Nederlanden only insures cars that are registered in the Netherlands. To apply, you’ll need to live in the Netherlands and your car must have a Dutch licence plate.

Additional coverage options
Alongside its standard cover levels, Nationale-Nederlanden offers three optional add-ons:
- Passenger insurance (SVI)
Financial protection for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of who caused it. Cover includes personal injury, damage to personal belongings and other financial losses, up to € 1,000,000 per claim. - Motor legal protection (Rechtsbijstand)
Legal assistance for traffic-related disputes, including recovering damages from another party. The policy also covers the legal costs involved. - Breakdown assistance (Pechhulp)
Provides 24-hour roadside assistance if your car breaks down. Roadside assistance is available for the Netherlands, Europe, or Europe excluding the Netherlands.
Claim-free years and the no-claims bonus ladder at Nationale-Nederlanden
In the Netherlands, every year you drive without making a claim adds one claim-free year (schadevrij jaar) to your record. The more claim-free years you have, the higher your no-claims discount is likely to be.
If you’re switching from another Dutch insurer, your claim-free years are usually verified through Roy-data, the national database used by most insurers. Claim-free years earned abroad are assessed separately.
If you make a claim that cannot be recovered from the responsible party, you’ll usually lose part of your no-claims discount. Claims for glass damage, storm damage, theft, or damage recovered from the at-fault party don’t normally affect your claim-free years.
Nationale-Nederlanden’s no-claims bonus ladder
Dutch insurers use a no-claims bonus ladder (bonus-malusladder) to calculate your no-claims discount. Each claim-free year moves you up one step, while a claim that affects your claim-free years moves you down several steps at once.
Nationale-Nederlanden’s ladder has 25 steps. Drivers with no claim-free years already receive a 47% discount, while the maximum discount of 80% is reached after 20 claim-free years.
Second car scheme at Nationale-Nederlanden
Unlike some other Dutch insurers, Nationale-Nederlanden doesn’t apply the same no-claims discount to a second car as it does to the first (tweede autoregeling). Instead, each additional car or motorcycle insured within the same household receives a 5% premium discount.
The discount applies to up to four vehicles, as long as everyone is registered at the same address. This includes you, your partner and any children living at home.
