InShared car insurance
InShared is an online-only insurer and part of Achmea, one of the Netherlands' largest insurance groups. You can't compare InShared through our comparison tool, so you'll need to buy your policy directly from the insurer. One thing that sets InShared apart is their so-called JaarBalans. If there's money left over after claims and expenses have been paid, the insurer refunds part of the surplus to its customers.

Founded in 2009, InShared was launched by Achmea as one of the Netherlands’ first online-only insurers. It was created to make insurance simpler, offering straightforward products, digital self-service and clear communication. Today, InShared is one of the country’s best-known online insurance brands.
With InShared, you’ll manage almost everything online. From taking out a policy to making changes and reporting a claim. Phone support is available, but it’s mainly intended for urgent claims and breakdown assistance.
One of InShared’s best-known features is the JaarBalans. Part of every premium is reserved to pay claims and operating costs. If there’s money left over at the end of the year, customers who didn’t make a claim receive a share of the surplus.
Like all Dutch insurers, InShared is supervised by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM).
Pros and cons of InShared car insurance
How InShared’s JaarBalans works
“JaarBalans is one of InShared’s best-known features. If there’s money left over after claims have been paid, customers who didn’t make a claim may receive a share of the surplus. This is a nice extra if it happens, but not something to rely on. In fact, JaarBalans hasn’t paid out since 2021.”

Is InShared car insurance available in English?
No. InShared’s website, online account, policy documents and customer communication are all in Dutch. The insurer doesn’t currently offer an English version of its website or insurance documents.
Can I get help in English if I don’t speak Dutch?
In most cases, no. InShared doesn’t offer dedicated English-language support. Because it’s an online-only insurer, most day-to-day tasks are handled through your online account, chat or a contact form, all of which are in Dutch.
Phone support is mainly reserved for urgent situations, such as accidents or theft. You may be able to speak to someone in English, but this isn’t guaranteed.

Additional coverage options at InShared
InShared offers three optional extras that you can add to your policy.
- Passenger insurance (SVI)
Covers injuries and damaged belongings for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of who was at fault. Cover is provided up to € 1,500,000 per incident. - Breakdown assistance Netherlands (Pechhulp Nederland)
Provides 24/7 roadside assistance anywhere in the Netherlands. If you get a flat tyre, your battery goes flat or you’re locked out of your car, help is on the way. If your car can’t be repaired within two days, InShared will arrange a replacement vehicle. - Breakdown assistance Europe (Pechhulp Europa)
Offers the same 24/7 roadside assistance across most of Europe. If repairs take longer than two days, InShared will also arrange a replacement vehicle.
Claim-free years and the no-claims bonus ladder at InShared
The longer you go without making a claim, the less you’ll usually pay for your insurance. Every claim-free year (schadevrij jaar) increases your no-claims discount. After 6 claim-free years, you’ll receive a discount up to 72%. With 16 claim-free years, you’ll qualify for the maximum discount of 80%.
Making a claim can reduce your discount, which means your premium may go up in the new insurance year. That’s why it’s not always worth claiming for minor damage. If repairs cost around € 500 or less, paying the bill yourself could work out cheaper in the long run.
Second car scheme at InShared
Already have an InShared policy? You can insure a second car with the same no-claims discount as your first, up to the maximum of 80% (tweede autoregeling). Unlike many Dutch insurers, InShared applies your full discount to both policies from the start. From then on, each policy builds up its own claim-free years. A claim on one policy won’t affect the no-claims discount or claim-free years on the other.
