OpGroen car insurance
Since taking over Aon's personal insurance business on 1 August 2024, OpGroen has become the point of contact for former Aon customers. Unlike most Dutch insurance intermediaries, OpGroen offers advice and policy documents in English.
Compare car insuranceWhat happened to Aon car insurance?
Aon transferred its personal insurance business in the Netherlands to OpGroen Verzekeringen as part of a strategic decision to focus primarily on commercial insurance and risk management.
Existing Aon customers didn’t need to take any action. Their policies continued as normal, with OpGroen taking over the day-to-day management. If you come across older letters or documents mentioning Aon, that’s simply because they were issued before the transfer.
About OpGroen car insurance
OpGroen is an insurance intermediary rather than an insurer. Instead of offering its own policies, it advises customers and arranges cover with a range of Dutch insurers. Policy advice and day-to-day customer support are provided by OpGroen Verzekeringen, while OpGroen Assuradeuren handles claims and policy administration on behalf of insurers.
OpGroen offers three levels of cover: third-party liability (WA), third-party liability + limited cover (WA beperkt casco) and third-party liability + comprehensive cover (WA volledig casco / all risk). Roadside assistance for the Netherlands and abroad is included as standard, rather than offered as an optional extra.
OpGroen is supervised by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and the Dutch Central Bank (DNB). The AFM oversees how financial service providers operate, while DNB monitors their financial soundness.
Pros and cons of OpGroen car insurance
Is OpGroen car insurance available in English?
Yes. Unlike most Dutch insurance intermediaries, OpGroen offers a dedicated international service. Advice and support are available in English, and international clients receive their correspondence and policy documents in English as well.
Do I need to be a Dutch resident to take out this policy?
Usually, yes. OpGroen’s car insurance is intended for people who live in the Netherlands and have a car registered there. If you’ve recently moved to the Netherlands, OpGroen’s international department can help expats, international employees and NATO personnel arrange the right cover.
English-language support and documents
“English-language support is still relatively uncommon in the Dutch insurance market. OpGroen is one of the few providers that offers both English-language support and policy documents for international customers.”

Additional coverage options OpGroen
Besides the standard cover, OpGroen offers three optional add-ons:
- Motor legal protection
If you become involved in a dispute about an accident, liability, a repair or your car’s warranty, this cover gives you access to legal assistance. The legal assistance is provided by ARAG, a specialist legal protection insurer. - Accessory cover
Factory-fitted equipment is covered under your standard policy. Accessories you’ve added yourself, such as a navigation system or upgraded audio equipment, are covered up to € 1,250 by default. You can increase this limit to € 2,500 or € 5,000. - Passenger insurance (Inzittenden Plus)
This cover protects you and your passengers for up to € 1,000,000 per accident. It can help cover costs that aren’t fully covered elsewhere, including additional medical expenses, loss of income due to permanent disability, home adaptations, household help and damage to personal belongings carried in the car.
