Univé is a cooperative insurer owned by its members rather than shareholders. Unlike many insurers that mainly operate online, Univé has a network of local branches where you can arrange insurance or speak to an adviser in person. The insurer also offers health, home and liability insurance alongside its car insurance cover.
Univé car insurance is available in three levels: third-party liability (WA), third-party liability + limited cover (WA beperkt casco) and third-party liability + comprehensive cover (WA volledig casco / all risk). Optional extras include motor legal protection, breakdown assistance and passenger insurance.
Like all Dutch insurers, Univé is supervised by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and the Dutch Central Bank (DNB). The AFM oversees financial services, while DNB helps ensure insurers remain financially sound and able to pay claims.
Pros and cons of Univé car insurance
Here’s an overview of the main advantages and disadvantages of Univé car insurance:
Local branches alongside online service
“Univé combines online services with a network of local branches where customers can arrange their insurance or speak to an adviser. This makes Univé a strong fit for drivers who value personal service alongside the convenience of managing their policy online.”
Jean-Paul Würsten,
Car insurance expert
Is Univé car insurance available in English?
No. Univé’s website and policy documents are only available in Dutch. Some customer service representatives may be able to assist you in English, but this isn’t guaranteed and depends on who you speak to.
Do I need to be registered at a Dutch address (BRP) to take out this policy?
Yes. To take out a Univé car insurance policy, you must be registered at a Dutch address in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP), the Dutch civil registry. If you move abroad and deregister from the BRP, you can no longer keep your policy.

Additional coverage options
Univé offers several add-ons on top of the basics:
- Passenger insurance (SVI)
Provides financial cover for you and your passengers after a road accident, including personal injury, damage to personal belongings and other financial losses resulting from the accident. Cover is available up to € 1,000,000 per claim. - Motor legal protection (Rechtshulp verkeer)
Provides legal assistance for traffic-related disputes, such as recovering damages after an accident or resolving disputes over buying or selling a car. The cover only applies when the financial interest involved is at least € 175. - Breakdown assistance (Pechhulp)
Offers roadside assistance in the Netherlands and throughout Europe. If your car cannot be repaired at the roadside, Univé arranges transport to a garage. A replacement car is available if repairs take longer than 24 hours in the Netherlands or 48 hours abroad. - Free choice of repair shop (Vrije reparatiekeuze)
Lets you choose your own repair shop instead of using Univé’s approved repair network. - Accessory cover (Accessoiredekking)
Covers damage to fitted accessories, such as an audio or navigation system. Standard cover is up to € 3,000 and can be increased to € 5,000 or € 10,000. - Purchase value guarantee or new value guarantee (Aanschafwaarderegeling of nieuwwaarderegeling)
If your car is stolen or written off, purchase value guarantee reimburses the purchase price of an eligible used car for up to three years. New cars come with a one-year new value guarantee as standard, which can be extended to three years.
Claim-free years at Univé car insurance
Claim-free years (schadevrije jaren) are one of the main factors that determine the cost of your car insurance in the Netherlands. For every insurance year in which you don’t make a claim, you earn one additional claim-free year. In general, the more claim-free years you have, the lower your premium.
Univé’s no-claims bonus ladder
Like most Dutch insurers, Univé uses a no-claims bonus ladder (bonus-malusladder) to calculate your discount. Every claim-free year moves you up the ladder and increases your discount.
Univé’s ladder has 21 steps. Drivers with nine claim-free years reach step 15, where the maximum discount of 80% applies.
If you make a claim that can’t be recovered from another party, you’ll usually move down five steps. Claims for storm damage, glass damage or damage that is fully recovered from the responsible party normally don’t affect your no-claims discount.
Second car scheme at Univé car insurance
If you already insure a car with Univé, you may be eligible for its second car scheme. This allows you to insure a second car with the same no-claims discount as your first policy, which can reduce the premium from the start.
Each policy still builds up claim-free years separately. As a result, a claim on one policy doesn’t affect the no-claims discount on the other.
