Volkswagen car insurance
Volkswagen car insurance combines manufacturer-approved repairs with the flexibility to choose the cover that suits you. Covered repairs are carried out by authorised Volkswagen dealers using original Volkswagen parts, and you can choose the level of cover that suits you.
Compare car insuranceAbout Volkswagen car insurance
Volkswagen car insurance is designed specifically for Volkswagen owners and gives you the choice of three levels of cover: third-party liability (WA), third-party liability + limited cover (WA beperkt casco) and third-party liability + comprehensive cover (WA volledig casco / all risk). Depending on the policy you choose, you can add several extras such as breakdown assistance, motor legal protection, replacement transport and extended accessory cover.
One of Volkswagen’s main strengths is its close connection to the Volkswagen dealer network. Covered repairs are carried out by authorised Volkswagen dealers using original Volkswagen parts and the manufacturer’s repair methods. This helps to maintain your car to Volkswagen’s standards.
Volkswagen car insurance is arranged by Volkswagen Pon Financial Services (VWPFS), with Allianz acting as the insurer. Volkswagen Pon Financial Services is supervised by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM), while De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) oversees the financial stability of insurers operating in the Netherlands.
Pros and cons of Volkswagen car insurance
Volkswagen car insurance offers several benefits for Volkswagen owners, but there are a few drawbacks to consider as well.
Is Volkswagen car insurance available in English?
Volkswagen car insurance is primarily offered in Dutch. The website, application process and policy documents are only available in Dutch, so you’ll normally manage your policy in Dutch from start to finish.
For everyday tasks, a translation tool will usually get you a long way. If you’re taking out a policy, checking the policy conditions or reporting a claim, it’s worth asking a Dutch speaker to help.
Some customer service agents may also be able to assist in English, but Volkswagen Financial Services doesn’t guarantee that English-language assistance is available.
Do I need to be a Dutch resident to take out this policy?
You’ll need a Dutch address and a car registered in the Netherlands with a Dutch licence plate. Your postcode is one of the factors used to calculate your premium, so you’ll normally need to be living in the Netherlands when you apply.
Repairs through the official dealer network
“Volkswagen car insurance stands out for its close connection to the official dealer network. If your car is repaired following a covered claim, the work is carried out by an authorised Volkswagen dealer using genuine Volkswagen parts and the manufacturer’s repair methods. This added peace of mind can come at a higher premium, so it’s worth comparing your options before you decide.”

Calculate your Volkswagen premium
Your Volkswagen premium is tailored to your personal situation. The insurer looks at factors such as your Volkswagen model, where you live, your age, driving history and expected annual mileage. The level of cover you choose also makes a difference, as do any optional extras you add, such as breakdown assistance or motor legal protection.

Additional coverage options
Volkswagen offers several optional extras that let you tailor your car insurance to your own needs. These are the main ones to consider:
Motor legal protection
Legal assistance is available if you become involved in a traffic-related dispute. This includes recovering damages after an accident, disagreements over liability, or disputes about the purchase, maintenance or repair of your Volkswagen.
Extended accessory cover
Accessories fitted to your Volkswagen are insured up to € 3,500 as standard. If you’ve invested in more expensive equipment, you can increase the limit to € 5,000.
Extended new value guarantee
The standard comprehensive policy includes one year of new value cover. By extending this to three or five years, you’ll receive the new value of your Volkswagen if it’s stolen or written off during that period.
Passenger insurance
Passenger insurance covers the financial consequences of injuries sustained by the driver and passengers, including medical expenses, lost income and damage to personal belongings, regardless of who caused the accident. Cover is provided up to € 1,000,000 per incident.
Claim-free years at Volkswagen
Claim-free years (schadevrije jaren) reward safe driving. Every insurance year without a claim earns you one additional claim-free year, increasing the no-claims discount (no-claimkorting) on your Volkswagen car insurance over time.
Not every claim affects your claim-free years. If your insurer can recover the costs from another party, your claim-free years usually stay the same. Claims for events such as fire, storm or theft also generally don’t reduce your no-claims discount. The same is often true for windscreen damage, depending on your policy conditions.
If you make a claim that can’t be recovered from someone else, you’ll normally lose five claim-free years, reducing your discount and potentially increasing your premium.
The no-claims bonus ladder
Volkswagen uses a 20-step no-claims bonus ladder (bonus-malusladder) to calculate your discount. Drivers without any claim-free years start at step 1 with a 25% surcharge. As you build up claim-free years, you move up the ladder and receive a higher discount. At step 10, the discount reaches 62.5%, while the maximum discount of 80% applies from step 19.
Second car scheme at Volkswagen
Already have a Volkswagen insured through Volkswagen Financial Services? Then your second Volkswagen may also qualify for the same no-claims discount, even if it hasn’t built up any claim-free years yet. In the Netherlands, this is known as the tweede autoregeling (second car scheme).
The scheme is available for you or your partner, provided you live at the same address. Each car builds up its own claim-free years independently, so a claim on one car doesn’t affect the claim-free years of the other. Children living at home aren’t eligible.
