Centraal Beheer has been offering insurance in the Netherlands for more than a century. Founded in 1909, the company became part of Achmea in 2001 and is now one of the country’s best-known insurance brands. Its head office is in Apeldoorn, a city in the eastern part of the Netherlands.
Car insurance at Centraal Beheer comes in three tiers. Third-party liability (WA) is the legal minimum. Third-party liability + limited cover (WA beperkt casco) adds protection against things like theft, storm damage and fire. Third-party liability + comprehensive cover (WA volledig casco / all risk) covers most damage, including damage you caused yourself.
Centraal Beheer belongs to the Verbond van Verzekeraars, the Dutch insurers’ association, and falls under supervision by the AFM.
Pros and cons of Centraal Beheer car insurance
Is Centraal Beheer car insurance available in English?
Yes, to an extent. Centraal Beheer runs a dedicated English-language page for car insurance, covering the basics of cover, pricing and a FAQ section aimed at international customers. The core account environment and full policy documents remain Dutch, so it’s worth having key details checked by a Dutch speaker before you sign.
Can I insure an imported car or one without a Dutch licence plate yet?
Yes, but only with temporary third-party liability (WA) cover for the purpose of taking the vehicle to an RDW inspection. Centraal Beheer can arrange temporary cover over the phone, using the car’s chassis number instead of a licence plate number. Once the RDW has approved the vehicle and assigned it a Dutch licence plate, you can arrange a regular insurance policy and choose more extensive coverage if desired.
No notice period, but a slightly higher premium
“What stands out about Centraal Beheer is the lack of a notice period, even in your first year. That’s rare among Dutch insurers and an advantage if you like the option to switch without being locked in. The trade-off is a premium that’s usually a bit higher than the cheapest options on the market.”

Calculate your premium with Centraal Beheer
Your premium isn’t fixed. Like all Dutch insurers, Centraal Beheer calculates its pricing based on factors such as your age, the make and model of your car, and how many kilometres you drive each year. Your number of claim-free years also plays a role, as does the level of cover you choose. Third-party liability is the cheapest option. Third-party liability + comprehensive cover is the most expensive, since it’s also the most extensive.

Additional coverage options
Centraal Beheer offers three ways to extend your car insurance beyond the basics:
- Passenger insurance (SVI)
Everyone in the car is covered after an accident, driver included and regardless of fault. This includes injuries and damaged belongings, up to € 1,000,000 per incident. - Motor and medical legal protection (Rechtsbijstand verkeer en medisch)
Legal support if you end up in a dispute over damage, liability or buying a car. This also extends to disputes involving medical negligence. - Breakdown assistance Netherlands or abroad (Pechhulp)
If your car breaks down, Centraal Beheer will try to get you back on the road as quickly as possible. If the problem can’t be fixed at the roadside, your car will be towed to a garage. Replacement parts and breakdowns caused by poor maintenance aren’t covered.
Claim-free years and the no-claims bonus ladder at Centraal Beheer
Car insurance in the Netherlands may work differently from what you’re used to. Rather than paying a fixed premium, the price you pay depends largely on your claim-free years (schadevrije jaren). Every year you don’t make a claim earns you another claim-free year, which increases your no-claims discount.
With Centraal Beheer, that discount can be as high as 79%. This percentage is usually reached after around ten claim-free years. If you make a claim that can’t be recovered from another party, you’ll lose five claim-free years in one go.
No-claims bonus ladder at Centraal Beheer
Centraal Beheer uses a 30-level no-claims bonus ladder (bonus-malusladder) to calculate your discount. The more claim-free years you have, the higher you move up the ladder and the bigger your discount. The maximum discount is 79%, reached at level 28. If you make a claim that affects your no-claims discount, you’ll move down the ladder and lose a part of your discount.
Second car scheme at Centraal Beheer
Already have a car insured with Centraal Beheer? Then you can insure a second car with the same no-claims discount as your first. That discount can be as high as 79%, while many other insurers only offer a reduced discount for a second car. To qualify, both cars must be registered at the same address. They must also be insured by the same policyholder or their partner.
