FBTO car insurance
Founded in 1956, FBTO is part of Achmea, one of the largest insurance groups in the Netherlands. The insurer is known for its flexible, self-service approach, letting you build your own policy with optional cover instead of choosing a fixed package.

FBTO has been helping Dutch drivers get insured since 1956 and is part of Achmea. The insurer is best known for its digital-first approach, making it easy to arrange and manage your policy online.
Car insurance starts with one of three cover levels: third-party liability (WA), third-party liability + limited cover (WA beperkt casco) or third-party liability + comprehensive cover (WA volledig casco / all risk). Want more protection? Simply add optional modules, such as breakdown assistance or motor legal protection. You can easily switch these extras on or off whenever your needs change, giving you more flexibility than a standard fixed policy.
FBTO is licensed by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM). This means the insurer is supervised and must meet strict standards for reliability, transparency and financial strength.
Pros and cons of FBTO car insurance
Is FBTO car insurance available in English?
No. FBTO’s website, policy documents and claims process are all in Dutch. While some customer service representatives may be able to help you in English, that’s not guaranteed and depends on who you speak to.
Can I manage my FBTO policy without speaking Dutch?
This depends on the task. Day-to-day tasks in MijnFBTO, like switching a module on or off, mostly involve clicking through menus rather than reading dense text. Filing a claim is trickier, since the form itself is in Dutch and asks for specific details about what happened. A translation tool or a Dutch-speaking friend makes that part far more manageable.
Flexible cover you can adjust at any time
“FBTO’s biggest strength is its flexibility. You can add or remove optional modules whenever your needs change. Just keep in mind that the second-car scheme gives you a fixed discount rather than transferring your no-claims discount. If you’ve built up many claim-free years, that could mean a lower discount on your second car.”

Calculate your premium with FBTO
Like every insurer, FBTO bases your premium on the level of risk you present. The most important factors are:
- Your age and driving experience
- The number of claim-free years you’ve built up (schadevrije jaren)
- Your car, as more powerful or expensive models usually cost more to insure
- Where you live, since areas with higher accident or theft rates often have higher premiums
- How many kilometres you drive each year

Additional coverage options at FBTO
FBTO calls these add-ons “modules.” You can choose which modules you need and adjust your coverage when your situation changes.
- Passenger insurance (SVI)
Provides financial cover for the driver and passengers after an accident, regardless of who was at fault. Injuries are covered up to € 1,000,000, while personal belongings are covered up to € 5,000. - Breakdown assistance Netherlands (Pechhulp Nederland)
Round-the-clock help for breakdowns in the Netherlands, from a flat tyre to a car that won’t start. If your car can’t be repaired on the spot, it’ll be taken to a garage and you’ll receive a replacement car. - Breakdown assistance abroad (Pechhulp Buitenland)
Extends the same cover to breakdowns outside the Netherlands. If your car can’t be repaired immediately, FBTO arranges repairs at a local garage and provides a replacement car if needed. - Motor legal protection (Rechtsbijstand)
Covers legal disputes involving your car or a traffic accident, such as liability disputes, damage claims or traffic fines. Disputes related to buying or selling a car aren’t covered.
Claim-free years at FBTO
In the Netherlands, your driving history plays an important role in what you pay for car insurance. Every year without a claim earns you one claim-free year, and the more you build up, the lower your premium gets.
Most insurers calculate their discount using a fixed no-claims scale (bonus-malusladder). FBTO takes a different approach and calculates your discount individually, although the principle stays the same: the more claim-free years you have, the lower your premium is likely to be.
If you make a claim you’re responsible for, you’ll usually lose five claim-free years. Some claims, such as glass damage, don’t affect your claim-free years.
Second car scheme at FBTO
Unlike some insurers, FBTO doesn’t transfer your no-claims discount to a second car. Each car builds up its own claim-free years separately, which can be less beneficial if you insure multiple vehicles.
What you do get is a flat 7.5% discount on the base premium for every additional car you insure with FBTO. That applies to your second, third and fourth car. The car can be registered to either you or your partner. The only requirement is that all cars are insured under the same policy and registered at the same address. Children living at home aren’t eligible.
