OHRA was founded in 1925 as a health insurer for Dutch government employees. Over the years, it expanded its offering to include car, home, travel, health and liability insurance. OHRA became part of Delta Lloyd in 1999 and joined NN Group when NN Group acquired Delta Lloyd in 2017.
Today, OHRA is a fully online insurer. Most policy changes and claims are handled through Mijn OHRA or the OHRA app, while urgent assistance after an accident or breakdown is available by phone 24 hours a day.
Like all Dutch insurers, OHRA is supervised by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and the Dutch Central Bank (DNB), which together oversee how insurers operate and help ensure they remain financially able to pay claims.
Pros and cons of OHRA car insurance
OHRA has its strengths and trade-offs. These are the main advantages and disadvantages to consider before taking out a policy:
Built for digital self-service
“OHRA is built around digital self-service. Most policy changes and claims can be handled online through your account or the OHRA app. This makes it a good fit for drivers who prefer managing their insurance digitally, while those who value face-to-face advice may prefer an insurer with local branches.”

Is OHRA car insurance available in English?
Not officially. OHRA’s website, application process and policy documents are available in Dutch only. Customer service is aimed primarily at Dutch-speaking customers, so English-language support is not guaranteed.
Can I manage my OHRA policy without speaking Dutch?
Yes, but it may require some extra effort. Most day-to-day tasks, including updating your policy, reporting a claim and viewing your documents, are handled through Mijn OHRA or the OHRA app, both of which are available in Dutch only. A translation tool is often enough for simple changes, but it’s worth asking a Dutch speaker for help if you’re dealing with policy conditions or a claim.

Additional coverage options
OHRA offers five optional extras to extend your car insurance:
- Extended package (Aanvullend pakket)
Available with third-party liability + limited cover and third-party liability + comprehensive cover. The package includes a new value guarantee (nieuwwaarderegeling) for new cars, a purchase value guarantee (aanschafwaarderegeling) for used cars, accessory cover (accessoiredekking) up to € 3,500 and free choice of repair shop. An additional excess applies. - Passenger accident insurance (OIV)
If the driver or a passenger dies or suffers permanent disability in an accident, this cover pays a fixed amount, regardless of who was at fault. The payout is € 25,000 in the event of death and up to € 75,000 for permanent disability. - Passenger insurance (SVI)
Covers the financial consequences of an accident for everyone in the car. This includes medical expenses, damage to personal belongings and other insured losses, regardless of who caused the accident. - Motor legal protection (Rechtsbijstand motorrijtuig)
Legal assistance if you become involved in a dispute related to your car, whether it’s about liability, recovering damages or a repair that didn’t go as planned. - Breakdown assistance Netherlands (Pechhulp Nederland)
24-hour roadside assistance throughout the Netherlands. If your car can’t be repaired where it breaks down, OHRA arranges transport for both you and your car to a garage or another destination.
Claim-free years at OHRA
Claim-free years are one of the main factors that determine the cost of car insurance in the Netherlands. For every insurance year without a claim, you build up one claim-free year (schadevrij jaar), which can increase your no-claims discount over time.
If you’re switching from another Dutch insurer, your claim-free years are usually transferred automatically through Roy-data, the national database shared by all Dutch insurers. Claims for theft, fire, storm damage or damage recovered from the at-fault party normally don’t affect your claim-free years. A claim that can’t be recovered usually does.
OHRA’s no-claims bonus ladder
OHRA uses a 21-step no-claims bonus ladder (bonus-malusladder) to calculate your no-claims discount. Each claim-free year moves you up one step, while a claim that affects your claim-free years usually moves you down several steps at once. The maximum no-claims discount is 82%.
Second car scheme at OHRA
OHRA doesn’t offer a second car scheme (tweede autoregeling). This means the no-claims discount you’ve built up on your first car can’t be used for a second one. Each policy is priced separately, based on its own claim-free years and other rating factors.
